Hi Folks, once again I am happy to bring another traffic report to your table for general consumption, please add as much salt and pepper as you need :) This one is a bit later than standard because I’ve been in revision since Monday 29th September. Whilst I completed all of the data elements for this post on the 30th, I opted not to post until I was back in peak form, a bit like a body builder. The truth is that I get better publicity if I’m able to walk the football into the goal rather than belt it from 300 yards and hope that it goes near the goal. But actually I hate football (aka Soccer), I’m more of a blood bowl fan so a Touchdown by one of my Dark Elves would be more apt, preferably the witch elf. I digress.
September was a minor contraction in terms of WordPress numbers but the overall key analytics for September were far improved from August. As you will see in my up and coming charts, the situation is making a positive move in the right direction. I had a bit of a tough month in August and September in comparison to the 2013 figures is more than 3 times the traffic level which puts a big grin on my face.
For those of you keeping track of my ebb and flow, numbers are still low comparatively to titanic, in your face, cooking with gas numbers. They are not the epic, in your face, rolling wheelbarrows full of gold bullion to the bank sorts of figures. The truth is that if they were those sorts of numbers, I would have failed my degree module or been fired sort of numbers so at least they are in the realms of control. But viral would be nice and it actually gives me an idea for a post for October. At any rate.
Better numbers as you will see.
A shout out
In particular I’d like to thank all of those individuals who participated in “The doing what you love question”. It has been one of my most rewarding posts to date and I was stoked about the comments that I received in return. So a shout out to Andrew Warner from shadeofinfo.com, Mi Muba from beamoneyblogger.com and Andrew Spence from andrewspenceonline.com for your comments. Twitter was instrumental in providing the majority of activity on this post and I enjoyed interacting so if anybody ever feels like laying down the gauntlet, please do! It is most enlightening.

I always seem to have at least one post that doesn’t perform well every month despite my efforts to make them interesting. Some pick up in following months or never get started. I was pleased to see comments this month, and am always grateful to reward those who make the effort.
As you can see, it was quite a light offering this month, only 7 posts total. This was all down to my gearing down for revision which has taken a lot of my time in recent weeks. I’m looking forward to putting another University module behind me as I steam on.
Because Actual Time on Site is considered one of my more important factors, I’m concerned with yet another low showing this month, hence the two sad faces. Bounce Rate has improved but is still high in the scheme of things yet I’m puzzled by other stat providers who indicate my site with much lower bounce rates than that purported by Google Analytics. Post performers is not something I have a grip on yet.
Pageviews are up and by quite a lot in comparison to last month but they are not near the highest levels I’ve seen in other months. Once I have more spare time I can devote some further quality upgrades and cast the net a bit wider which should help to improve on these statistics. The visits figure isn’t too bad but could be much better, likewise, some time improving could help boost this.
The gut feel points towards a slow improvement. I haven’t seen any viral explosions of epic proportions, more small wins at certain periods.
Finally purple reigns supreme again for the referral stats. Only an increase of 1 on the last month but still enough to send it into the records.
The stats are intriguing at the moment, I’m still tied in under the 1,000,000 mark for global rank and my engagement stats look good. This number has been shifting quite a lot, especially since my post rate dropped so it is clear that Alexa looks for how often you post.
End of Month Traffic Report September 2014 – Core Statistics
ATOS – Average Time on Site, GAF – Provided by Google Analytics
3 minutes 3 seconds or 183 seconds, adverse -39.8%
A further dip in the numbers which I actually put down in part to a seasonal effect.
Bounce Rate – Actual Traffic data, not filtered – Provided by Google Analytics
81.29% adverse 6%
The bounce rate took a good turn in the right direction this month but is still in the alert zone above 80%. Alexa stats (above) as always, are completely different to what Google Analytics pumps out.
Page Views – Provided by GAF and WordPress stats
WordPress: 215 adverse -5%
GAF: 70 inverse 18.64%
Better performance this month compared to last but not in the area I want to see. This figure is excellent compared to last year’s dismal figures.
Visits (Now known as sessions) – Provided by GAF and WordPress Stats
WordPress: 172 adverse -2.82%
GAF: 26 inverse 36.84%
Considerably better than last month on visitor numbers.
Visits per Visitor
The visits per visitor figure which is a ratio that is entirely uncontrollable settled on 1.25% this month, an overall upshot of .25% from last month. Wow! 🙂
Referrals – Provided by WordPress
Once again, by the skin of it’s teeth, another purple record is set and I hope this trend is a continuing one as search traffic does now contribute an ever increasing level of traffic to the site.
September was always going to be a difficult month for me with Revision. My exam falls smack down on 6th October so even writing this article is difficult during that period.
Comparing September as a performance month compared to September 2013 would tend to show a 3 fold increase. September 2013 was a bad month indeed.
I have noticed a seasonal drop as well, there are more distractions at this time of year to battle what with new mobiles coming out (those that bend apparently) and getting ready for Chrimbo (XMAS). It seems that the buying gene kicks into overdrive as the flood of seasonal advertising powers into full steam. Attitudes also become gloomy as the sun begins to fade sooner.
October is going to be slightly different in 2014 than it was in 2013. In 2013 my study stopped until the following February. This year I’m in a back to back situation with 2 modules going from B301 (which concerns me for the exam) and DD309 which excites me because I have no final exam. Having opted to accelerate the final part of my study to award me the Honours Degree in Business Studies (B70) is a necessary step as part of my exit plan from an organisation I am currently working in. October is going to take a bit of a beating because I’ll be eyes deep in a book once again. This October is more about holding station and not slipping back into older, darker numbers.
September performed better than I’d hoped, I had braced myself for a poor showing and was proved wrong.
